“The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want right now.” – Zig Ziglar

Zig Ziglar is one of the most read self-help author around the world. His books range from spiritual growth to being a successful salesman, but his topics barely steer away from the concept of self-discipline or self-control. His goals had always been to instil willpower to his audience and readers for them to succeed in life.

In the past few years, scientific studies have shed light on the once elusive science of self-control. Apparently, Ziglar was spot on when he said, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” Studies have found out that self-control is a limited resource; a reason why self-regulation often fails.

Dr. Roy Baumeister introduced the concept of “ego depletion” or the exhaustion of self-control. According to the studies led by him and his colleagues, self-control is like a gas tank that eventually runs out after frequent use. The good news is you can replenish your supply of self-control by maintaining a healthy amount of glucose levels, getting enough sleep, and doing yoga.

Another study states that having friends with high self-control may help one become better at it. A study led by psychological scientist Catherine Shea showed that people with self-control issues prefer the company of disciplined people as motivation. This demonstrates the role of friends in affecting one’s attitude.

Child psychologist and writer Bruno Bettelheim drew the line between punishment and self-discipline in his quote: “Punishment may make us obey the orders we are given, but at best it will only teach obedience to authority, not a self-control which enhances our self-respect.”
