We Do Not Inherit The Earth

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.

This famous quote is attributed to Native American sages of the old days. It’s a reminder that our actions have long term consequences and that these will not only influence our lifetimes but will affect those who come after us. It’s our responsibility to “pay into” that account rather than continue to draw from it.

This saying is also in a similar vein to the famous belief that our actions will influence the next seven generations. It encourages us to resist “short-termism” and to consider far into the future what the effects of our choices and acts will be.

In 2009, the biggest single report on the future of the planet served us a warning to humanity. Back by Unesco, the World Bank, the US Army, and the Rockefeller Foundation, the 6,700 pages draws the conclusion that “billions of people will be condemned to poverty and much of the civilisation will collapse.”

With the contributions of 2,700 experts worldwide, the report focuses on the dire effects of the global recession to the future of mankind. Researchers warn that global clean energy, food availability, poverty, and the growth of democracy worldwide will grow worse in the face of global recession. The emerging environmental security issues produced by climate change are also brought into attention, as “changes in weather patterns to loss of livelihood and disappearing states—has unprecedented implications for political and social stability.” Despite the grim vision of shortages and violence, it serves as a wake-up call to humanity “to move from its often selfish, self-centered adolescence to a more globally responsible adulthood.”

To quote Bertrand Russell: “The only thing that will redeem mankind is cooperation.” But in the 2014 article by Robert Savio, founder and president of the Inter Press Service, he expressed frustration on the unwillingness of some countries to invest in clean energy. Despite IPCC’s conclusive report that climate change is due to the action of man, to compromise is far too costly and unpractical for some. To paraphrase Savio, governments are still unable or unwilling to consider the future of mankind despite the evident threats of climate change.

“What we do in life echoes in eternity.” – Maximus, “Gladiator”

The film “Gladiator” is an epic-historical drama by Ridley Scott in 2000. It garnered 119 award nominations and won 48 prizes in 36 ceremonies including the BAFTA Awards, the Golden Globe Rewards, and the 73rd Academy Awards. The huge success of the movie influenced the sale of the books “Cicero: The Life and Times of Rome’s Greatest Politician” and Marcus Aurelius “Meditations”. It also started the revival of historical epic genre films.

One of many quotable lines in the movie, this line was spoken by Maximus as he addressed his warriors before a fierce battle. However this line is applicable to all fields of life, not just the battlefield. It’s an exhortation to live true to our highest ideals and bring our very best to whatever we do.

In the movie, the lead character, Maximus Declimus Meridius, was appointed as Legate of the Emperor’s Legion by Emperor Marcus Aurelius, making him the youngest general appointed in Roman history. The elderly emperor was killed by his embittered, jealous son Commodus after revealing his decision of appointing Maximus as his successor. Suspecting Commodus of the crime, Maximus refused to swear allegiance to him. Commodus ordered him executed but he successfully escaped and returned home only to find his wife and his son hung and his property destroyed. He was captured by thieves that night and was sold to the old gladiator Proximo. The rest of his life was then dedicated to seeking vengeance for the death of his family, while struggling to stay alive in the arena. Finally he appears in front of Commodus in the Circus Maximus – although under his warrior’s mask, his true identity is not known until the final showdown.

Actor Russell Crowe won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in his portrayal of Maximus. Empire magazine put Maximus 35th place in their 100 Greatest Movie Characters, and the American Film Institute included him in their list of 100 greatest screen characters. Commodus was also superbly played. But Maximus is only a fictional character speculated to be a composite of actual historical figures. Regardless, he continues to be one of the most memorable and soulfully played characters in a movie.

“By cleansing your body on a regular basis and eliminating as many toxins as possible from your environment, your body can begin to heal itself, prevent disease, and become more stronger and resilient that you have dreamed possible!”Dr. Edward Group III

Edward F. Group is a known American chiropractor, naturopathic physician and author who founded the Global Healing Center in 1998. He has written numerous books and articles about natural healing methods, the focus of his study for over 20 years, and developed over 40 proprietary inventions and formulations.

Dr. Group takes on the mission of teaching and promoting philosophies that produce overall good health through clean environment, healthy “real food”, and positive thinking. Importantly, he exposes hidden truths of the medical industry, condemning their emphasis on treating symptoms of disease as opposed to addressing the underlying cause of the condition. He believes that the medical industry should focus more intently on prevention than cure – a view that is now representative of the “natural health community”.

He states that the prime reason of today’s numerous illnesses is the accumulation of toxins in the body. Under his leadership, Global Healing Center promotes body detoxification to achieve maximum health and vitality. Walking the talk, he also helped develop Earth Harmony Organics Farm, an outgrowth of Global Healing Center, and acted as its master herbalist. The farm combines earth based agriculture with contemporary and advanced growing techniques to produce the finest quality biodynamic, organic medicinal herbs.

It’s been reported that most people absorb thousands of health depleting toxins right in their very homes. This condition has actually been exacerbated with the rise of “sealed” houses; energy-efficient homes have been draught-proofed to such an extent that toxins off-gassed from consumer products now build up to levels that are regarded by many as hazardous. Indeed the EPA has stated that indoor air quality is one of the top 5 public health hazards of the modern age!

Without habitual full body cleansing, the likelihood of acquiring degenerative health conditions is now thought to multiply over time, because the body has lost its internal self-healing mechanism. Dr. Group maintains that people are virtually surrounded with toxins, which is also considers includes negative or “toxic” thoughts. He hopes that people will someday realize that their “convenient” lifestyle could be the very thing that’s killing them.
