“Be with those who bring out the best in you, not the stress in you.”

This is a stellar advice for self-improvement in any areas of your life. There really are people who exude positive vibes that naturally brings out your creativity and character. We wanna be with them; in fact, we wanna work for them. Imagine having a boss like that! But do you have what it takes to be THAT kind of person?

Alan Loy McGinnis‘ book “Bringing Out the Best in People” offers 12 principles on how to do just that. In a nutshell, it’s about expecting the best from people, recognizing and applauding their achievement, and not making failure too much of a big deal. Of course, it’s also about doing what you preach. You yourself have to be an inspiration to the people around you.

Bruce Kasanoff of Forbes narrowed it down to 5 easy steps in his article “5 Simple Ways to Bring Out the Best In Others.” By simply being generous, open-minded, clear, persistent, and present, he believes that anyone can bring out the best in others, whether they be friends, family, or employees.

An article in the Harvard Business Review described 2 kinds of leaders: the Diminishers and the Multipliers. Taking a cue from the terms, diminishers drain all the talent out of their teams by focusing on making themselves stand out, while multipliers bring out the best in their teams by paying attention on individual talents and interests. Multipliers expect top-notch results but give their people
room for growth.

Are you a diminisher or a multiplier?
