“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.” – Dale Carnegie

Dale Harbison Carnegie (1888 – 1955) was the author of the bestseller self-help book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” and “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living”. He was a famous American writer and lecturer on self-improvement.

Carnegie was raised in an impoverished family in Missouri. In an early age, he had discovered his natural flair with words and decided to use this talent for his success. He became a skilful orator after joining debate teams and speech competitions. After college, he took a job as a travelling salesman, putting his interpersonal skills into good use. His career stopped when he enlisted in the US army but after the war, he was hired as business manager of a travelling lecture course.

This quote by Dale Carnegie reflected how he found success despite the financial obstacles he had to face early on his life. He invested on his abilities and used them as a stepping stones to finish his education and find a good career that later became a basis for his lectures and writings.

Persistence despite obstacles is one of the many valuable traits of successful people throughout history. These other quotes will prove that even the smartest and most talented people are nothing without persistence:

“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” – Albert Einstein

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Perseverance is a great element of success. If you only knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
