Actions always prove why words mean nothing.

Children begin shaping their aspirations at home. Accordingly, parents play a crucial role in helping them set higher goals and making sure they live to their highest potentials. Yet what parents often overlook is how their actions speak louder than words—most especially to their daughters.

Owing to the success of women in various fields commonly and traditionally occupied by men, little girls are encouraged to do more with their lives and reach higher lengths. It’s the 21st century after all! However, fathers may unknowingly send a different message to their daughters.

In a study led by Alyssa Croft, a PhD Candidate in the University of British Columbia’s Dept. of Psychology, it was found that fathers who help with household chores are more likely to raise daughters who dare to challenge the status quo on gender employment. To put more candidly, they are more likely to raise daughters who aspire to have higher paying careers.

It suggests that no matter how a father tells his daughter to strive higher, if he expresses unwillingness to take part on domestic duties, his daughter is less likely to feel empowered. Whereas, if a father willingly takes on domestic duties, it sends a clear message to his daughter that duties and careers are not defined by gender.

This goes to show that parents’ actions create a much stronger impact on their children’s future than their words. In the end, a child feels empowered by what they see every day at home than by what they hear.
